The FTC and Debt Settlement Advocates Forbid the Use of "Red Flag Words" in Advertising

Facing one of the highest unemployment rates since 1948, currently 9.7%, debt negotiation services is a rapidly growing and relevant industry within our struggling economy. NYU, Professor Nouriel Roubini, recently stated "a rising probability of a catastrophic financial and economic outcome. A vicious circle of losses, capital reduction, credit contraction, forced liquidation and fire sales of assets at below fundamental prices will ensue, leading to a mounting cycle of losses and further credit contraction."

Regardless of the current economic status, debt settlement is a lawful and well needed debt solution. However, with the rise of consumer complaints, attorney general investigations, subpoenas, lawsuits and new legislation on the forefront it is imperative for consumers to know what the FTC and Advocates of Debt Settlement Industry have defined as "Red Flag Words" in relation to advertisements or sales practice.

You will often see advertisements with the headlines reading "DEBT FREE" or "ELIMINATE DEBT". These terms have been deemed as "Red Flag Names " by the FTC and do not comply with TASC standards,The Association of Settlement Companies.

The reason the FTC has classified this terminology as Red Flag Words is that no one can guarantee a specific outcome in relation to debt arbitration. Advertisements or debt consultants that imply a debt negotiation program will totally eliminate or leave them debt free is misleading.

Furthermore, when a debt relief company advertises the amount of debt to be reduced in percentage terms, such as "Reduce Debt by 65%" or "Save up to 50% on what you Owe", such percentages must be based on the actual historical performance of that specific debt settlement services.

Debt negotiation is an alternative to Bankruptcy and Credit Counseling, however, it is important for consumers to know what to avoid when choosing a debt settlement company. Finding a TASC or USOBA approved settlement company will insure a commitment to promoting good industry practices.

Epic Debt Relief was founded by Bankers and Lawyers who understand how the current economic crisis has affected millions of Americans including ourselves.
